Practice Fail

Yoga isn't always graceful. And you can't be afraid to look like a big dummy sometimes.

I'm a firm believer in the importance of levity. Approaching your practice with gravitas is one thing, being stern and miserable while practicing is quite another. You don't have to be serious to be serious.

The old employee shirts (of which I own many) at the DC Improv were emblazoned with a great Oscar Wilde quote: "Life's too important to be taken seriously."

Succinct!

There are so many things wrong with the video that follows. I was obsessing over angles, and (vanity!) how lined up I was-- reaching out and drawing in muscularly, but managing to do neither mentally. I wasn't, as some other yogis say, "being present."

I'm glad I think to record my practices here and there: it brings levity to my practice and gives my ego a good what-for.

Someone At The Post Liked Working Today

Traffic Yam: Sweet Potatoes Block Lane on I-295 North - washingtonpost.com

"Call it a traffic yam.

A tractor-trailer loaded with sweet potatoes has lost its load."

Someone really enjoyed going in to work at the Post today. I absolutely LOVE clever headlines! Especially the kind of clever that also elicits a groan.

I'm reminded of a story from my younger days: One morning, at like 5 am, I was coming home from DC. I was still in High School, and probably had no business being out all night, but I was staying the night at Phoenix's.

I digress. As I was saying, coming from Alexandria proper and making my way towards High School in King George, Virginia (90 miles or so away), I needed to cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, an old drawbridge notorious for delaying commuters (they've since built a new one that terrorizes commuters to a much lesser degree).

Anyway, when I tried to cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, well, I failed. Bumper to motherfrakin' bumper. Parking lot status. We were there so long, I got to see the sun come up. Or, ya know, would have had I not fallen asleep in the car.

The reason for this sticky situation? Maple Syrup.

If only these calamities could have coincided. I'd have eaten
my way out! My teachers didn't buy the reason I was late, but luckily, they didn't care much, either!

Yay public schools!

High in the Sky

Some of you may know Erin Jackson, but for those of you that don't, let me tell you this: she's an incredible comedic talent. She's made it to Ellen, tours all over the country, and also happens to be a dear pal.

She flies more than most due to the nature of the stand-up biznass. Okay, maybe not as much as a lot of other people, but whatever, she flies here and there.

I really don't know how much she flies. I'm just making stuff up, but I suspect she flies a good bit. I'm sure more than me.

Anyway, I wish I could have been on this plane to give in one of the potentially best "Oh, snap!"s of my life.
